Phosphate-Free Metal Surface Treatment

Pretreatment before painting decides how well a coating sticks and how long it resists corrosion. Zirconium conversion coatings deliver that performance without the environmental burden of phosphating.

Phosphate-Free Metal Surface Treatment

The Problem with Traditional Phosphating

Zinc and iron phosphating has been the standard pretreatment for decades, but it is under growing pressure. The process discharges phosphorus-rich wastewater that causes eutrophication, and many zinc phosphate baths contain nickel and manganese.

Phosphating also produces large amounts of sludge, needs heated baths at 40–60 °C, and requires a separate activation step. Disposal costs and stricter discharge limits make it increasingly expensive to run.

Why Zirconium / Silane Conversion Coating

Zirconium-based conversion coatings form a thin, dense nano-ceramic layer on the metal that gives strong paint adhesion and corrosion resistance. They contain no phosphate and no heavy metals, produce very little sludge and make wastewater treatment much simpler.

They work at room temperature with short treatment times, so energy and chemical consumption drop significantly. One bath can treat steel, galvanized steel and aluminium together.

Recommended Products

HTG-2 is our phosphate-free zirconium/silane conversion coating. For best results, parts are first degreased with the HTS Series water-based cleaner, which removes oils without solvents.

Technical Points and Typical Industries

A typical line is: alkaline degreasing → water rinse → HTG-2 conversion coating (spray or immersion) → deionized water rinse → painting, electrocoating or powder coating. Thorough cleaning and good rinse water quality are essential for a uniform film.

The process is widely used for automotive sheet metal and parts, home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines, metal furniture, cabinets and general industrial coating. Existing phosphating lines can usually be converted with minor changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does zirconium conversion coating perform as well as phosphating?+

Under modern paints, electrocoats and powder coatings, a properly controlled zirconium coating gives comparable adhesion and corrosion resistance.

Is it suitable for aluminium?+

Yes. It treats aluminium, cold-rolled steel and galvanized steel, which makes it ideal for mixed-metal production.
